Embroidering a baby blanket might look as simple as choosing a cute design and pressing start on the embroidery machine.
But there is actually quite a bit I consider before the first stitch ever goes into the fabric!
Here are five things I think about when creating an embroidered baby blanket.
1. The Fabric
Not every fabric behaves the same way under an embroidery machine.
Soft, plush fabrics can allow stitches to sink down into the fibers, while thinner fabrics may need additional support to keep the design looking smooth.
Choosing the right stabilizer and embroidery method for the fabric is incredibly important.
2. The Design
I love detailed embroidery, but the design still needs to work with the blanket.
If the fabric already has an adorable woodland print, for example, I may choose a small coordinating woodland design rather than something large that competes with the fabric.
The goal is for everything to look like it belongs together.
3. Thread Colors
This might be one of my favorite parts!
Sometimes I'll pull several thread colors and lay them directly against the fabric before deciding.
A tiny difference in shade can completely change the finished look.
I usually want the embroidery to stand out enough to be noticed while still coordinating beautifully with the colors already in the blanket.
4. Placement
Before embroidering, I think about how the blanket will actually be used.
Will the embroidery look pretty when the blanket is folded?
Will you still be able to see the design when it's draped over a rocking chair or blanket ladder?
Does the placement make sense when a little one is using it?
Those little details matter.
5. The Finished Feel
At the end of the day, I don't want to make something that only looks pretty in a photograph.
I want it to feel like a real baby blanket.
Soft. Cozy. Useful. Washable. And made for everyday childhood.
