Before an embroidered baby outfit ever makes it to my shop, quite a few decisions happen behind the scenes.
Embroidery isn't simply choosing a design and putting an outfit under the machine!
Here are five things I consider when creating an embroidered outfit for a little one.
1. The Outfit Style
A baby bubble doesn't have the same amount of embroidery space as a toddler sweatshirt or T-shirt.
The size and shape of the garment help determine which embroidery designs will work best.
I never want a design to look crammed into a tiny space or so large that it overwhelms the outfit.
2. The Design Size
This is a big one.
A beautiful embroidery design can quickly become too much if it's stitched too large on a tiny baby outfit.
I want the embroidery to be noticeable while still looking proportional to the garment.
Sometimes making a design slightly smaller creates a much prettier finished piece.
3. Thread Colors
Picking thread colors might be one of the most fun parts of the entire process.
I'll often compare several shades before deciding which ones work best with the garment and the embroidery design.
Those little color choices can completely change the personality of the finished outfit.
4. Placement
Even a beautiful embroidery design can look strange if it isn't positioned correctly.
Before stitching, I think about where the design will sit when the outfit is actually being worn—not just how it looks lying flat on my sewing table.
A little measuring and planning beforehand can make a huge difference.
5. Would I Choose This in a Boutique?
This might be my favorite question.
When I finish an outfit, I want it to feel like something you could discover hanging inside a sweet little children's boutique.
