Buying for a baby shower sounds easy… until you walk into the baby section and realize there are approximately 4,782 adorable things to choose from. 😂
Tiny outfits are almost impossible to resist, but here's the thing: everyone buys the baby clothes.
And babies grow FAST.
That precious newborn outfit may get worn once—or sometimes not at all—before it ends up in the outgrown pile.
So if you're looking for a baby shower gift that's a little different, useful, and hopefully remembered long after the shower is over, here are a few of my favorites.
1. A Handmade Baby Blanket
Okay, I may be a tiny bit biased here. 🪡😂
But a beautiful baby blanket is one of those gifts that can grow right along with a child.
It can start as a cozy blanket for stroller rides or snuggling with Mom and Dad, become the blanket dragged around the house during toddlerhood, and eventually find its way into a keepsake box.
And when it's handmade, there's something even sweeter about knowing that particular blanket was chosen and sewn especially carefully—not pulled from a stack of thousands identical to it.
Gift idea: Choose a print that matches the family's personality instead of only matching the nursery. Woodland animals, farm prints, florals, outdoorsy designs and classic neutrals can all feel personal without needing a name added.
2. Bib & Burp Cloth Sets
This may not be the glamorous answer, but new parents can NEVER have enough of these. 😂
Seriously.
One in the diaper bag.
Three in the laundry.
Two mysteriously missing.
Another under the couch.
A handmade bib and burp cloth set makes a practical gift feel much more special, especially when they're made from beautiful fabrics that Mom probably wouldn't buy herself.
Pair them with a blanket and you've instantly created an adorable little gift bundle.
3. A Lovey
Small enough for little hands and easy to tuck into a diaper bag, loveys make such sweet gifts.
They're especially nice when you're putting together a gift basket and want something handmade without purchasing a full-size blanket.
And sometimes that little lovey becomes THE lovey.
You know the one.
The one nobody is allowed to wash because heaven forbid it disappear for 45 minutes. 😂
4. A Handmade Keepsake Item
Not every baby shower gift has to be something the baby needs immediately.
Consider something the parents can save.
A handmade quilt, special blanket, embroidered keepsake, memory box or another sentimental piece may not get the biggest reaction from the baby—obviously 😂—but years later, it can mean much more than another package of onesies.
Those are the gifts that often become part of the child's story.
5. Books With a Note Written Inside
This is one of my absolute favorite affordable baby shower gifts.
Instead of giving a card that may eventually be thrown away, choose a children's book and write your message inside the cover.
Imagine that child being five years old and still reading the same book with a little note from someone who loved them before they were even born. 🥹
You could even pair the book with a coordinating handmade blanket for a cozy little "storytime" gift.
That would be ADORABLE.
6. Something for Mama
Everybody comes to the shower carrying something for the baby.
Meanwhile, Mama is the one doing all the work. 😂
Add something small just for her.
It doesn't have to be expensive—a coffee gift card, favorite snack, cozy socks, lip balm or little self-care item tucked into the baby's gift can mean a lot.
It's simply a way of saying:
"I remembered you, too."
7. A Handmade Gift Bundle
This might be my favorite option because you can combine practical and sentimental gifts.
For example:
A handmade blanket + bib + burp cloth + wooden teether.
Or…
A blanket + embroidered outfit.
Or…
A lovey + children's book + small gift for Mama.
Suddenly you've created something that looks incredibly thoughtful without needing an enormous gift basket.
And if you choose handmade pieces, there's a good chance nobody else at the shower will arrive carrying the exact same thing.
The Best Baby Shower Gift Doesn't Have to Be the Most Expensive
Years from now, nobody is going to remember who bought package #7 of newborn onesies.
But they might remember the person who gave their child that blanket.
The one in all the pictures.
The one they dragged through the house.
The one that went to Grandma's.
The one Mom eventually folded up and couldn't quite bring herself to get rid of.
That's why I love handmade baby gifts so much.
