What Size Baby Blanket Should You Buy? A Simple Guide for Parents & Gift Givers

Shopping for a baby blanket sounds simple… until you realize there are so many different sizes!

Loveys, baby blankets, stroller blankets, toddler blankets—what does a baby actually need?

The best size really depends on how you hope the blanket will be used. If you're shopping for your own little one or looking for a special baby shower gift, here's a simple guide to help.

Lovey Blankets

Loveys are the smallest option and are made to be easy for little hands to carry around.

They're wonderful for cuddling, taking along in the stroller, keeping nearby during playtime, or eventually becoming that special little blanket a child wants to carry everywhere.

They're also a sweet addition to a baby gift basket.

Baby Blankets

A traditional baby-sized blanket gives you more room while still being manageable enough to carry in a diaper bag or stroller.

These are wonderful for supervised snuggles, tummy time, stroller outings, pictures, visits to Grandma's house, and everyday use.

If you're buying a baby shower gift and aren't sure which size to choose, a baby-sized blanket is usually a wonderful place to start.

Toddler Blankets

Babies don't stay babies for very long!

A larger toddler blanket gives a child something they can continue enjoying as they grow.

These are especially nice for cuddling on the couch, road trips, preschool naps, reading books together, and eventually using in a toddler bed.

For gift giving, I love the idea of choosing something that won't immediately be outgrown.

Child and Larger Blankets

Larger blankets can continue well beyond the baby years.

They're perfect for movie nights, bedroom décor, traveling, sleepovers, or simply curling up somewhere cozy.

This is also where a handmade blanket can really start becoming part of someone's childhood.

So Which Size Should You Choose?

Think about the person you're buying for.

Want a small addition to a gift basket? Try a lovey.

Want a versatile baby shower gift? A baby blanket is a great choice.

Want something they can continue using as they grow? Consider going larger.

There's really no single "perfect" size—the best blanket is the one that fits the memories you hope they'll make with it.

One Important Safety Note

While baby blankets are wonderful for supervised cuddles, stroller outings, tummy time, photos and other everyday moments, safe-sleep recommendations should always be followed. Loose blankets should not be placed in an infant's sleep space.

Handmade for the Little Moments

At Hollow Creek Heirlooms, I love creating blankets in different sizes because every family uses them a little differently.

Some become stroller blankets.

Some stay at Grandma's.

Some are dragged from room to room by a toddler.

And some eventually end up folded inside a keepsake box because Mom simply can't bring herself to part with them.

That's the beauty of a good blanket.

It's such a simple thing—and somehow it gets to be there for so much of childhood. 🌿🤎
